THE SPAS-NA-KROVI CATHEDRAL (THE OUR SAVIOR ON THE BLOOD CATHEDRAL)
The Spas-na-Krovi is situated on the embankment of the Griboedov Canal. The place where the cathedral is built is of great account for the history of the Russian Empire, because there Emperor Alexander II was wounded to death by Ignatiy Grinevsky on the 1st of May, 1881. And it is the very place where they began constructing the cathedral in 1883. It lasted up to the year 1907.
The Spas-na-Krovi Cathedral has nine domes and is distinguished by bright and variegated beauty; the building bears a resemblance to the St. Basil the Blessed Cathedral in Moscow. The cathedral is 79.8 meters high. The domes for the cathedral were made in Finland.
Not only Russian, but also foreign masters decorated the cathedral. The iconostasis crowned with three rock crystal crosses was made in Genoa on the project by architect Parland, its icons were painted by the great artists of the Russian Empire M. Nesterov and V. Vasnetsov. There are mosaics depicting evangelical plots made on the project by V. Vasnetsov above the southern and the northern entrances.
From the outside the building is decorated with glazed bricks, ceramic tile; the enameled domes are iridescent. Inside the Spas-na-Krovi Cathedral is decorated with mosaic to religious plots on sketches by the artists A. P. Ryabushkin, N. A. Koshelev, N. P. Shahovskoy, and others, and with semiprecious stones.
