THE ALEXANDER NEVSKY LAVRA
The functioning at present friary called The Holy Trinity Alexander Nevsky (Alexandro-Nevskaya) Lavra is one of the most beautiful architectural and historical memorials of St. Petersburg. It is located behind the stone wall at the end of Nevsky Prospekt (Avenue).
The friary was founded in 1710. It bears the name of the great Russian military leader Alexander Nevsky who gained the historical victory over Swedes. The friary was built near the place at the Neva where the great Battle on the Ice took place.
There is a small church near the entrance to the friary which was constructed in 1783-1785 under the direction and on the project by I. Starov. The center of the architectural ensemble of the Alexander Nevsky Lavra is the Holy Trinity Cathedral which was built in the period of 1776-1790, also on the project by I. Starov. There are Alexander Nevsky’s relics there.
The buildings of the Alexander Nevsky Lavra are constructed in baroque style. The Blagoveshchenskaya Church which is situated to the left of the entrance to the Alexander Nevsky Lavra was built on the project by Domenico Andrea Trezzini and Theodor Shvertfeger in 1724. The great Russian commander A. V. Suvorov is buried there.
Actually, a lot of outstanding historical figures are buried on the territory of the Alexander Nevsky Lavra; there are several churchyards there, for instance, Lazarevskoye churchyard where Natalya (Peter the First’s sister), M. V. Lomonosov, architects I. Starov, A. Voronihin lie. Other famous figures are buried on the Tihvinskoye churchyard: I. Krylov, F. M. Dostoevsky, M. Musorgsky, P. Tchaikovsky, M. Glinka, N.
